Piano Lessons

When approaching an instrument, each student learns in their own way. Mrs. Sakanyan’s style of piano teaching is based around individual personalities and goals to achieve the fastest possible development, and ensuring that the activities of the lesson include enough fun to keep ongoing lessons interesting. As a classically trained musician, Astghik makes sure the student has the right knowledge and technical foundation while playing pieces of student’s choices within their level. Astghik enjoys watching the improvement in her students' technique and skill in creating music. There is a certain passion that teaching brings out in her, which makes her look forward to each lesson.

As it was mentioned before, each student is unique and until they do not have their first lesson it is hard to identify the ability/material best suited for him/her. But with her years of teaching experience Mrs. Sakanyan created the following general identifications depending on each age group:

Young Students

Astghik has experience teaching students as young as 4 year old, sometimes having small groups of two or three students of this age. Lessons for students of ages 4 or 5 include lots of listening, rhythm tapping, body percussion, identifying the piano keys with some fun tips, learning to play some short songs as well as some musical concepts and note reading. Mrs. Sakanyan’s main goal for students of this age is creating a special connection with music in general which encourages them to discover the mystery of the piano. Depending on each student’s abilities, she would move forward with a selected method book sooner or later.

The first stage of learning process for students of age 6 or 7 is similar to the previous group, but in a slightly accelerated version. Soon students would be encouraged to continue their learning process followed by a method book suggested by Mrs. Sakanyan.

Astghik also has wide experience teaching students starting from 8 year old and up. If the student is a beginner, he/she will be provided with a separate material and after the first lesson the student would be notified of the suitable method/repertoire book. If the student already has previous experience taking lessons, Mrs. Sakanyan would ask the student or their family member to send information of the last work done with their previous teacher to better predict student’s needs.

Adult and Teenage Students

Weather you have previous experience or not with music education or playing the instrument in the past, you are welcome to join Astghik’s studio! She will make sure to quickly identify your needs and interests and give suitable guidance for you.

The great thing of learning a new skill at an older age is that students already know better what would they like to achieve by taking lessons and what are their long term goals. Besides working on some technical exercises to build up student’s technique, Astghik encourages them to choose repertoire that is close to their heart. If the students does not have a specific piece in mind Astghik is happy to give them some options to choose from within their level.
